Hariyali Teej or Shravani Teej is called the Tritiya of Shukla Paksha of the month of Shravan. According to the English calendar, Hariyali Teej falls in the month of July or August. Hariyali Teej is mainly a festival of women. In the month of Sawan, when the earth is covered with a blanket of greenery, women swing on swings, sing folk songs to enjoy this beautiful moment of nature. On the occasion of Hariyali Teej, fairs are held at many places across the country and Goddess Parvati’s ride is taken out with pomp.

Traditions on Hariyali Teej
The first Sawan festival after the marriage has special significance for newly married girls. On the occasion of Hariyali Teej, girls are called to Pihar from their in-laws’ house.
1. Sinjara is celebrated a day before Hariyali Teej. On this day, clothes, jewelry, makeup items, henna, and sweets are sent from the newly married girl’s house.
2. There is special importance of applying mehndi on this day. Women and girls apply mehndi on their hands in different types of artworks. Alta is also applied on the feet on this day. This is a sign that the woman is married.
3. On Hariyali Teej, married women touch their mother-in-law’s feet and give her suhagi. If the mother-in-law is not there, then it is given to the sister-in-law or any other old woman.
4. On this day women worship Maa Parvati by wearing makeup and new clothes.
5. On Hariyali Teej, women and girls swing on swings in the fields or gardens and dance and sing folk songs.
Hariyali Teej Puja Method
According to Shiv Purana, the reunion of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati took place on the day of Hariyali Teej, hence this fast has great significance for married women. On this day women worship Mahadev and Mother Parvati. The worship method of Hariyali Teej is as follows.
1. On this day, clean the house and decorate it with a toran-mandap. Make idols of Shivling, Lord Ganesha, Mother Parvati, and their friends by mixing Ganges water in soil on a post.
2. After making the clay idol, perform Shodashopchar Pujan while invoking the deities.
3. The worship of Hariyali Teej fast continues throughout the night. During this, women also do jagran and kirtan.
Mythological Significance of Hariyali Teej
In Hinduism, every fast, and festival has mythological significance and there is an interesting story and legend associated with it. Hariyali Teej festival is also celebrated to mark the reunion of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati.
According to mythological belief, Mother Parvati did severe penance to get Lord Shiva as her husband. After this severe penance and 108th birth, Mother Parvati got Lord Shiva as her husband.
