According to legend, King Sagar became famous in three worlds with his philanthropy and virtuous deeds. He was being praised all around.
With this, Indra, the king of the gods, started worrying that King Sagar should not become the king of heaven. During this time, King Sagar organized Ashwamedha Yagna. Indra Dev stole the horse of Ashwamedh Yagya and tied it near Kapil Muni’s ashram.
On the information that the horse of Ashwamedh Yagya was stolen, King Sagar put all his 60 thousand sons in search of him. All those sons reached Kapil Muni’s ashram, searching for the horse. There he saw the horse of Ashwamedha Yagya. On this, they accused Kapil Muni of stealing a horse. Enraged by this, Kapil Muni burnt all the 60 thousand sons of King Sagar with a curse and consumed them.
Knowing this, King Sagar ran away and reached Kapil Muni’s ashram and requested him to give forgiveness to the sons. Then Kapil Muni said that there is only one way for the salvation of all the sons, you bring mokshadayini Ganga to earth.
Prince Anshuman, the grandson of King Sagar, vowed on the suggestion of Kapil Muni that no king of his dynasty will rest until mother Ganga is brought to earth. They started doing penance. After the death of King Anshuman, King Bhagirath pleased Mother Ganga with hard penance.
Mother Ganga’s velocity was so much that if she landed on earth, it would have been destroyed. Then King Bhagirath pleased Lord Shiva with his tenacity so that he would allow Mother Ganga to descend on the earth through his jatas, so that the velocity of Ganga could be reduced. King Bhagiratha was blessed to receive the blessings of Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva became Gangadhar by keeping Mother Ganga in his jatas.
Mother Ganga landed on earth and king Bhagirath ahead and mother Ganga started flowing on the earth behind. King Bhagirath brought Mother Ganga to Kapil Muni’s ashram, where Mother Ganga gave salvation to 60 thousand sons of King Sagar. The day Mother Ganga gave salvation to 60 thousand sons of King Sagar, that day was Makar Sankranti.
From there, Mother Ganga went ahead and joined the ocean. The place where they meet is famous as Ganga Sagar. According to religious beliefs, bathing in gangasagar or river Ganga on Makar Sankranti leads to salvation, and the sins of seven births are also erased.
